Enjoying Your Own Company

A lot of us grown up thinking that being alone is sad thing.  When we were kids , being sent to sit alone was punishment. Or in the playground , standing by yourself and nobody wants to play with you. We all carry the same hidden fear that if nobody is giving attention to us , we are alone that means we are wrong somewhere or people don’t like us.

But when we starts thinking all these things as an adult somewhere we all can relate that this is a kind of fear or dilemma we lives with that we have no friends or actually no one to really hangout and that leads to feel more being alone, guilty or sad about this.

But there is a huge difference between feeling lonely and knowing that you are enjoying your own time.

Learning to be comfortable by yourself is such a whimsical superpower anyone can have.  So, let’s figure out what enjoying your own company really looks like in real life.

First, Let’s clear up some myths :-

  • It doesn’t mean becoming anti-social. You can’t be the person who lives in woods and ignores contact with every another person.
  • Also it doesn’t mean you never need anyone- we are human beings we are built for connections, people , hugs, conversations..
So , after discussing some of the myths let’s talk about what does enjoying your own company actually mean?

So, in simple language enjoying your own company means that you are comfortable own your own, either you are in a room which is full or the room is quiet .

  • Very first thing I would like to add is to being comfortable spending time alone. You enjoy yours empty space having coffee/chai enjoying your own vibe.
  • You enjoys and you knows what you genuinely loves to do. Any simple thing that makes you feel relaxed. (Like in my case – I love the aura around me whenever I changes my bedsheet)Maybe it’s reading a book, watching an old movie, journaling, rearranging your room or doing something as simple as changing your bedsheet.
  • In my case, I genuinely love the aura around me whenever I change my bedsheet. It is such a small thing, but somehow it makes my entire room feel fresh.
  • And honestly, sometimes these tiny things are enough.
  • You’re being fully able to entertain yourself. (If you are comfortable with your own company, you don’t need someone to constantly text you or call you to have a good time).
  • You can take yourself out for coffee, watch a movie, read, listen to music, cook something, clean your room or simply lie down and think.
  • Your free time doesn’t automatically feel boring just because you’re alone.
  • The most important thing that you accepts yourself and you’re comfortable with your own thoughts. Your mind feels like safe, peaceful space to hang out . Rather than roaming around and constantly trying to escape yourself from everything.

Maybe it’s reading a book, watching an old movie, journaling, rearranging your room or doing something as simple as changing your bedsheet.

In my case, I genuinely love the aura around me whenever I change my bedsheet. It is such a small thing, but somehow it makes my entire room feel fresh.

And honestly, sometimes these tiny things are enough.

You Become More Comfortable With Your Own Thoughts

This might be the most important part.

Sometimes, we keep ourselves constantly busy because we don’t want to sit with our own thoughts.

Phone.
Instagram.
Netflix.
Music.
Scrolling.

Anything to avoid silence.

But when you slowly become comfortable being alone, your mind can start feeling like a safe and peaceful space to hang out in rather than somewhere you constantly want to escape from.

You Stop Depending on Constant Validation

When you become comfortable with yourself, you don’t need every decision to be approved by someone else.

You can wear something because you like it.

Watch something because you enjoy it.

Go somewhere alone because you want to.

And slowly, you realise that not every part of your life needs an audience.

You Understand Yourself Better

Spending time alone gives you space to actually notice yourself.

What makes you happy?

What annoys you?

What kind of people make you feel safe?

What do you genuinely want?

What are you doing only because everyone else is doing it?

These questions become easier to notice when there isn’t constant noise around you.

You Don’t Settle for People Just Because You’re Afraid of Being Alone

This is probably one of the biggest reasons why enjoying your own company matters.

Sometimes, we stay in friendships, situationships or relationships that don’t make us happy simply because the idea of being alone feels worse.

But when you know that you can enjoy your own company, being alone doesn’t feel like the end of the world.

You start choosing people because you want them in your life, not because you’re scared of having nobody.

Learning to Enjoying Your Own Company Takes Time

You don’t suddenly wake up one morning and become completely comfortable being alone.

Start small.

Have your coffee without scrolling.

Take yourself for a walk.

Watch a movie alone.

Spend an evening without constantly checking your phone.

Change your bedsheet and enjoy the fresh-room feeling.

Do something simply because it makes you happy.

And slowly, you might realise that being alone isn’t always something you need to escape from.

Sometimes, your own company can actually be pretty great.

Because at the end of the day, you are the one person you will spend your entire life with.

So maybe learning to enjoy your own company isn’t about becoming independent from everyone.

Maybe it’s simply about becoming a person you genuinely enjoy being around.

This is how enjoying your own company feels like
